SEO KEYWORD Research: Do It Right The First Time
Posted on 14. Jul, 2010 by admin in Search Engine Marketing
How do you go about doing your seo keyword research? Do you have your own system or set of steps that you follow? Let me share with you my own tried and tested keyword research and may it help you with optimizing your own website.
One of the initial steps that I do, and I also suggest that you follow, is to completely evaluate is with what topic does my website deal with. While you might say that this is quite an easy thing to do, in reality it is not. A lot of people do not start their research with this step because one, they believe they already know their website or online business inside and out, or two, because their site deals with a wide range of topics that you can't nail it down to a single one. If you ask me, the last one is the worst of all because it is harder to rank a website if it deals with a cornucopia of categories or topics. Sure it is possible to rank them at least through the individual pages, but this will be hard work and will consume much of your time. Compare that with focusing on just one theme or topic for all your seo efforts.
Next I use a keyword research tool. You can use any tool that you want but as for me, I often use Google's free keyword tool. I don't use more than two keyword research tools as I often find myself bombarded with too much data. Also keep in mind that the numbers you are getting are not exact but just estimates. Then I start my keyword research by using the broader terms that I would like to rank for. I don't use those broad keywords in my seo campaign as it is harder to rank for those keywords. I just use it as my starting point to help me find the long tail keywords which are more easier to compete in.
The single most important data that I look at in the keyword research tool is the monthly search volume. As far as I know, most internet marketers also do this. I pick out the keywords with a satisfactory amount of monthly searches. In my case, below ten thousand is usually good enough. Then I search for that keyword in the search engine and if there are just a few results, I keep that keyword aside for further evaluation and possible inclusion in my keyword list.
It is best to use just one single theme or topic in your keyword research and search engine optimizing for your website. This will help to keep your thoughts and ideas laser-focused for more effectiveness. With just one theme, it will be a lot easier for the search engines to identify which category or niche your website should belong and for which keywords should your site be ranking.
You are probably wondering how many keywords I usually get? It actually varies from one website to another and it often depends on the number of pages of the website. The reason for this is that I usually use just one or two keywords on every page. Still this also helps me stay focused with my seo campaign.
These are just some of the tips that you can follow for your keyword research for seo. It is a safe and effective process that can help you quickly collect the right keywords for your website. Just always remember to work within just one theme and your seo campaign will be all sound and good.
