Is Linkbait Bad Or Good?
Posted on 11. Aug, 2010 by admin in Web Site Traffic
If you have a blog, linkbaiting may have become a rule of thumb when writing content. It could be a good thing to some, but not all the time. But the real issue is... do bloggers know how to linkbait?.
Linkbait - What is it?
Linkbait is any blog post or article that can compel people to react. In the online world, a 'reaction' means your website or article will be mentioned and linked to in various places like forums, blogs and even social networks. Because people like discussion online, they are likely to write about your post on their own websites, or any page online where they can voice an opinion. They tell people about it by linking to you on their twitter pages, facebook walls, etc. A linkbait is an article or a comment that attracts traffic to your blog.
Is it always good to linkbait?
Linkbait can be ethical or not, depending on the situation. Good linkbaits are those that interest and provoke your target audience, like something on sex ed on a parenting blog. But if you have a parenting blog and then you suddenly talk about the latest showbiz gossip that doesn't interest your readers, your linkbait isn't very effective. Nevertheless, whether something that draws attention of people can be called bad or good linkbait is up for debate.
Linkbait Writing 101
There are article types that make people link back. How-to guides with high value content can wow people. Controversial opinion articles that tackle a new angle are always popular. Insider tell-alls or "exposure" articles are always effective as linkbaits, but they can have legal repercussions.
Inflammatory pieces make very good linkbaits but that doesn't mean you have to resort to writing these to grab attention. Just look at the way tabloids sell their stories.
A rule I learned long ago as a blogger is this... never post something that you cannot stand up for.
Give and You Shall Receive
Sometimes, reacting to other people's opinion can be the most effective linkbait. Linking to someone else's article instantly alerts the other blogger. Furthermore, some blogging platforms like wordpress allow trackbacks, which automatically places your "reaction" article's URL under the blogpost of the other blogger.
A blog or any website you own is a way to communicate with people. Your website will attract a certain audience. Your blog will start to become popular when people from all over start to visit and communicate with you. Being a blogger, you should always write posts that other people can proudly share on other sites. Always think of your audience when writing linkbait articles.
