Internet Marketing - Google Throws Us A Nice Surprise

Tell a Friend

A few of us in internet marketing, I have to tell you, simply love to bash Google. Being the 600 lb gorilla, its sometimes hard to see around or thru the giant so perhaps its simply easier to just examine it closely, find a flaw and broadcast loudly and clearly for all to hear.

And though the smart google programmers are fixing them up as fast as they can be found, due to the size of the real estate involved, there are always going to be flaws. My own pet peeve being that Google Analytics and hence the stats used by Alexa and dozens of other analytic type sites grossly under-reports true web traffic.

When Google claims I have had 2-300 unique visitors for the day, my 6 wordpress blog counters report/show an aggregate of 9-1,000 uniques and my AwStats reports which pull directly from my very accurate apache logs end up reporting 1200-1600 uniques – not returning visitors or bots.

How, pray tell, does one then reconcile google’s reported 300 unique visitors to my much more accurate AwStats report of nearly 1600 ?
No, its not bots or spammers, those are actually reported separately by AwStats.
You know, something just ain’t right about that. And,... this happens every day. That’s not a one time anomaly.

If you work at Google, Help me out !

If you drive to work at Google and you feel like shutting me up, go ahead, I have been waiting patiently for an explanation on this for months now. No real solutions come from groups of savvy affiliates when this is discussed..

Perhaps, Google for all its reach, is simply not quite fast enough to monitor the entire net.

Well, yeh, Google is not perfect and the smart guys and gals there know this and are working on solutions.

I could go on and bellyache about how those inaccurate google numbers also reflect directly in massively reduced adsense revenue yaddy, yaddy yah – but its only revenue right? I guess we all have more important things to bellyache about, lol.

But while I am at it, I have to say that I dont appreciate the way that the google directory simply copied dmoz ( which is the humanly eyeballed and way too difficult to get into directory ) renamed their copy as the google directory and then allowed this duplicate copy content to float way, way too high on the search rankings.

Some human at Google, please tell me what is the use in having the same duplicate entry floating twice in the top 10 of the search results ?

But Sometimes Google just gets it right !

I have to be the first to tell you. Google gave us a magnificent gift, I suspect within the past 48-72 hours (April 19th, 2010) but I am not sure exactly when.

Please peek in at the management console of the google webmaster tool. Then click on any of your registered sites. If you are not using the google webmaster tools, don't bother to read the rest of this article just run don’t walk. Get there now and first register all your money domains. Here is the link to the google webmaster tools.

They are now giving us actual real numbers for Queries, Clickthru rates and %.
And….

Google Webmaster Tool Finally useful

They are also telling us about clickthru rates when our sites are in different positions in the SERPS.

Wow, a wealth of new information now available. In just minutes, I dispelled some long standing 6 year old rumors with this new information.

You may already know that Positions 6-7 in the adword buy area was being advocated as best positions to buy for those wishing to stretch their dollar. This came out of Perry’s Adword Tutorials many years ago and for the most part is actually true.

The raw truth however is that position number 1 is usually the best position to buy if u have the big bucks but positions 6-7 can be great if you are stretching ad word budgets.

Well, now I can see that on a few of my keywords, I am also getting 300% more clickthru’s on position 6-7 – BUT WE ARE TALKING about ORGANIC search results now and not adwords or ppc. So, does this mean that every now and then positions 6-7 also get as much or more traffic than positions 1 or 2? Also, visible are Page 2 and sometimes even Page 3 serp results.

I am not ready to swear on that yet, explanations such as news reviews or videos or pictures in positions 4-5 that attract the eye could be part of the explanation.

Without, Google’s new addition to the webmaster tool, I would never have been able to see this nugget. Nor would anyone else have been able to convince any other marketer that some of this data might even be remotely significant.

Examining the huge amount of new information with this new tool, should result in quite a few new discoveries. I imagine seo, internet marketers and adword analysts will have no end of new puzzles to figure out. Each myth trampled could end up as tens of thousands if not millions of dollars in someone’s pocket.

Don't waste your time if you are in a massive hurry, because this new analytical information will surely cause you to lose an extra hour or more, lol.

This article assumes that you use the Webmaster Tool From Google for part of your traffic Analysis and if or have no clue what this article was about yet you have commercial websites, then you really need to get with the program. This is a case where what you don't know, could hurt you.

Warm Regards
